This month we are focusing on the emotional health we can gain or improve upon through journaling as a habit. Every Wednesday will bring you a new post with new information and opportunities so that you can delve into this subject. As they are posted, the content will be linked to at the bottom of this Challenge.
According to Psych Central there are multiple different health benefits to journaling including: clarifying your thoughts and feelings, knowing yourself better, reducing stress, solving problems more effectively, and resolving disagreements with others.
With this in mind Prism Perfect is setting out to help you start off this new year stress free (or at least with a good way to cope with the stress.) Join us over the month of January as we journal and explore fun ways to improve our emotional health.
Let’s start at the very beginning. (A very good place to start.)
Grab an empty notebook, a video camera, or your laptop and keep a journal the best way you know how.
Describe and Delve Into Your Heritage
Where did your ancestors come from? What do you know of the traditions of your family, and the places your family descends from?
Your Favorite Childhood Place
Find a picture of your favorite childhood spot, or draw it if you can’t find a picture. Describe some of the smells, sights, and sounds you noticed in this place. What are some of your favorite memories of this place as a child?
Tell About Your Family
Describe your parents. What did they do for work? How did they meet? How many siblings do you have? Are you an only child? What are the family dynamics you’ve experienced in your life?
Schools You Have Attended
Did you attend preschool? Where were you for elementary, junior, and high school? Have you graduated from college or are you currently attending?
Who were some of your favorite teachers, professors, and instructors and how did they impact you?
Are there any special memories that you have from your years in school?
Tell Us About What You Consider Home
Is home your rental, your dorm, or you parents house? Is home a feeling, an experience, or a physical place for you? What makes it so?
Favorite Family Vacation
Describe your favorite family vacation. Where did you go, and what did you see? How long were you there, and what was the objective of the trip?
Who went on this vacation with you? What did you eat? What activities did you participate in? What did you see, smell, touch, hear, and taste?
Lists, Lists, and More Lists...
Let’s List Your Priorities
Imagine your priorities as glass and rubber balls that you are juggling through life. You cannot afford to drop the ball when it comes to the glass balls, but the rubber balls can withstand being dropped, and picked back up again when necessary.
In comparison, remember the idea of dropping golf balls, the rocks, then gravel, sand, and water into a jar. What constitutes the large gold balls that are first priority and what filters through the cracks like the water?
Places You’d Like To Go
Countries you’d like to visit, restaurants you’d like to experience, theme parks you’d like to go to, you name it.
This is the place to pour out your ideas of adventure.
So we know where you’d like to go, but what would you like to do? Ride in a hot air balloon? Learn to basketweave?
The sky is the limit, what are some dreams that you’d like to see come to fruition?
Show Your Gratitude
We’ve all been blessed immensely from the food on our table to our working and capable bodies. Make an in-depth list of all of the blessings you’ve received.
Why are you thankful for these things? Why have these things made a difference in your life?
Try to go beyond just skin deep.
Put Your Music On Shuffle
Listen to the first five songs that play, and write why you have that song and what it reminds you of.
Where were you when you first heard the song? Who was with you? Do you have the words memorized, or is it a tune without lyrics? What part of your personality does this song reflect?
Face Your Fears
What are some of your fears and how have you tried to overcome them?
Your fears can be something as ridiculous as bugs, being eaten by a shark, or the dark. Your fears can also be losing your spouse to cancer, never accomplishing your dreams, or finding yourself in poverty without being able to support your family.
How have you overcome those fears or tried to make them less of a possibility?
Make a list of three important things you’d like to accomplish and how you plan on making those dreams come true.
What is your zodiac sign? Do you feel like it is a good match, or were you born at the wrong time?
Have read your horoscope recently? Any interesting develops in your future, or surprising coincidences in your past?
Your First Car
Tell about your first car. Whether old and ugly or new and shiny, a car is a new taste of freedom that we can’t help but appreciate. Maybe you’ve never driven a car, but you have a favorite bike, or prefer the train.
Tell us about your mode of transportation.
Quote to Live By
What is one of your favorite quotes and how does it impact your life? Is it a scripture verse? Is it wise words from a friend or family member.
Write down words that have cut to your core, and have had an influence over the person that you are.
What is Your Favorite Outfit In Your Closet
Whether it be your favorite pajamas you sit in drinking hot cocoa, or a snazzy dress you like to where out on a date, find something that makes you happy each time you where it.
Now take a picture. Print the picture, and glue it into your journal. (Can’t print and paste, draw it in!)
Qualities to Improve
What are some qualities you are always trying to improve about yourself? This isn’t an opportunity to think about how awful you are. This is an opportunity to seriously reflect on your qualities that are good, and improve on your shortcomings.
Be forgiving to yourself, we all have struggles.
What are some of your favorite hobbies? How did you come to find these? Were you introduced through a friend or Pinterest? How has it changed the way you perceive the world, and yourself?
What are some hobbies you would love to take up and try?
What is Your Chicken Noodle Soup?
What is your secret to winding down and the end of a hard frustrating day? Do you treat yourself with chocolate and a bath? Do you request cuddles from your significant other? Maybe you literally feel calmed by Chicken Noodle Soup.
Whatever it is, write it down. Explain days where this becomes absolutely necessary.
Collection of Thoughts
A Novel Idea
What is your favorite book, and why? Do you prefer series that seem to never end? Or is a single book the ticket to paradise.
Books are a form of travel, and should be used to bring joy.
What is a fictional character you resonate most with?
Who Inspires You
We all have someone we look up to, whether it be a celebrity, a parent, a sibling, a friend, a biblical figure, or a stranger.
Who has had a huge impact on how you see yourself, and how you treat others? Who has had an impressive impact on how you view the world?
Lions, and Tigers, and Bears; Oh My
Have you ever had a favorite pet that you will never forget? Write about them.
Maybe you aren’t a pet person and you prefer a rock that can fend for itself. Describe your favorite pet, memories you shared, and the impact they had.
If you hate pets, be creative and come up with a new species of animal you wouldn’t hesitate to keep!
Every family has a tradition, whether a certain restaurant for birthdays, nativities at Christmas, or a regular family vacation to who-knows-where.
Think back on your family traditions, and what is so special about each one that keeps the family close in prosperous times, as well as times of trials.
Name One of Your Greatest Accomplishments
Everyone has one.
It could be graduating from school, acing that test, climbing that mountain, or helping out a stranger. Don’t sell yourself short.
Most important: this is something YOU feel is your greatest accomplishment, no one else.
A Challenge That Helped You Grow
Trials can bring out the worst and best in us. What is a trial you have lived through where you have begun to see how it shaped you into who you are, for the better.
Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter: all lovely times of the year, but which is your favorite and why?
Is it the pumpkin spice everything, or the long sunny days at the beach? Is it the way the cherry trees bloom, or the way the snow glistens in the morning?
5 Years From Now
Give yourself the who, what, when, where, and why of where you’re at 5 years from now. How did you get there?
10 Years From Now
Repeat. Give yourself the who, what, when, where, and why of where you’re at 10 years from now. How did you get there?
If you were to experience your funeral from the other side, what would you like to read in your obituary. How would you like people to remember you?
Write a letter to your future self. This is all about you.
